Mayaguana

General Information

Mayaguana has about 250 inhabitants and is 40 km long. Villages like Pirates Well, Abrahams Bay and Betsy Bay will leave an impression you will never forget. An island where everyone is like "family". Abandoned beaches with maybe the best bonefishing there is because of the many flats. A fine Island for Do-It-Yourself Bonefishing! Drive a car across the island to find new flats or go out with the canoe into an area like Curtis creek.

Fishing Information

Mayaguana Bahamas is perhaps the most beautiful Bonefish destination in the world for DIY saltwater fly fishing in an adventurous and affordable way with nature, tranquility and space.

Mayaguana is an island with many flats where many big bones can be found (up to 15 pounds) and is an excellent area for popper fishing for Barracuda and Jacks. Tarpon and Permits can also be found on some flats.

There are no skiffs on Mayaguana so most fishing is done wading. There is a canoe you can use which gives you the opportunity to cross channels or fish in a little deeper water. The majority of the flats can be fished just wading.

Seasons

Mayaguana can be fished most months of the year but the best months are april, may and june. The summer months can also be very good but if it gets to hot the bonefish will head to deeper water. With the right tide and weather you can still catch some very nice fish though. After the summer, when the temperature goes down again the fishing gets better. November is another good period but has a bit of a risk with cold fronts.

The Accommodation

Baycaner Beach Resort is a nice lodge with excellent service, great ocean view rooms and all the amenities you need. The staff is very friendly and they have a great cook. The Owner and manager "Shorty" is a very friendly man who takes great care of his guests.

The lodge derives its name from the well at its center. Rumor has it, the well was dug by pirates who sailed the waters of the Bahamas centuries ago.There are 16 rooms at the resort. Each one is steps away from the ocean and has air-conditioning, satellite tv and a private bath. When you get hungry, make your way to our waterfront dining room. Choose a delicious Bahamian specialty from our menu or have your Catch-of-the-day prepared the way you like it. Our bar is always stocked with beverages. Enjoy a tropical cocktail or relax in the salon and play pool, watch television or make use of our wireless Internet. BBR offers a unique vacation experience. Travel Schedule

Guests fly from their airport of choice to Nassau and spend a night there to fly to Mayaguama the next day. 1 Overnight Orange Hill, Nassau. Arrival at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The flight Nassau - Mayaguana is 1.5 hours. Flights from and to Mayaguana are on mondays and fridays.
